Nippon Series 2009
The 2009 Nippon Series was the 60th edition of the finals of the Japanese baseball championship . The Best of Seven series took place between October 31 and November 7, 2009. The Yomiuri Giants from the Central League faced the Hokkaidō Nippon Ham Fighters from the Pacific League . Both teams had finished the regular season in first place and prevailed in the playoffs, the Climax Series , against their league competitors. Home rights in the first two games and the sixth game went to the Nippon Ham Fighters.
The Giants prevailed against the Fighters with 4-2 games and won the championship title for the first time in seven years and for the 21st time. The Giants catcher Shinnosuke Abe was named MVP of the series, who hit two home runs , including a Sayonara home run in the fifth game , and brought the Giants into the lead in the sixth game with an RBI double.
The Yomiuri Giants contested on November 14, 2009 against the winner of the Korean Hanguk Series , the Kia Tigers , a game in Nagasaki for the "Korean-Japanese Club Championship" - the Asia Series held in the past four years with additional participation from the Republic and the People's Republic of China had been abandoned. The Giants won 9-4.
The playoffs
The playoffs began with Stage 1 of the Climax Series on October 16 (Pacific League) and October 17 (Central League). In the regular season of the Central League, the two first-placed Yomiuri Giants and Chūnichi Dragons were established as participants in September, the Tōykō Yakult Swallows only prevailed against the Hanshin Tigers and the Hiroshima Tōyō Carp in the fight for third place at the beginning of October . In the Pacific League, the Nippon Ham Fighters secured first place on October 6th.
In Stage 1, the runners-up came out on top in both leagues. As in 2008, the first place finishers of the regular season started with a victory lead in Stage 2, which began on October 21, and both qualified 3-1 for the Nippon Series.
