Origin and meaning

The first name Nisa can be derived from the name Denise , which in turn comes from Dionysus , or a Frisian or Silesian form of Agnes . It is also the name of the Qur'anic sura An-Nisā ' "the women" and is given by Muslims in this sense.

It is noticeable that the first name Nisa was very rare before the year 2000; in the Netherlands a sharp increase in the frequency can be observed from 2004 onwards. In Germany this increase began in 2005.
