Nissum Fjord

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The inland water Nissum Fjord is located on the Danish North Sea coast, about 25 km west of Holstebro and 25 km north of Ringkøbing .

General

The Strandsee has an area of about 7,000 hectares. A spit that is just 200 m wide at its narrowest point separates it from the North Sea. Due to the shallow water depth, four different plans were drawn up between 1844 and 1870 to drain the area in order to gain agricultural land. In 1873 a Koog in the southeast, the Felsted Kog, was completed. However, the dikes did not last long. Finally, between 1935 and 1965, a comparatively small part was drained again.

At the coastal town of Thorsminde there is a lock system with twelve drainage locks and one chamber lock. Inaugurated for drainage in 1866, today the system is only used to regulate the water level and salinity in the Nissum Fjord.

Cultural

In previous years (2015 to 2019), the Nissum Fjord Dagen day of action was held on the last Sunday in August .

nature

In December 2018 the Nissum Fjord was certified as a nature park by the Danish umbrella organization Friluftsrådet . Nature parks should help to preserve nature and cultural landscapes and to develop them for gentle tourism ; they are not actually nature reserves .

Nissum Fjord has extensive reeds, important resting and breeding areas for birds, especially for geese and duck species as well as waders. This reed bed enjoys protection status according to the international Ramsar convention .
