View over the northern part of Thorsminde |
Thorsminde (until 1995 Torsminde ) is a small port town on the Danish west coast with 330 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020). Since the municipal reform in 2007 Thorsminde is part of the municipality Holstebro , Central Jutland .
Thorsminde is located on Bøvling Klit , the spit between the North Sea and Nissum Fjord . A lock divides the place into a north and a south half. Secondary route 181 runs in a north-south direction .
The main industries are tourism and fishing. In the 1930s, a pier for fishing boats was created on the lake side. This was expanded to today's Westhafen in 1966. In 2011 the municipality of Holstebro replaced the Danish state as owner. Sailing boats moor in the old harbor ( Gl. Havn ) on the branch canal east of the lock.
Place name
The place name appears for the first time in 1466 as Torsmynnæ and is interpreted as "Dorschmünde" ( torsk dt. Dorsch , minde / udmunding dt. Mouth).
tourism
There is a campsite and numerous holiday homes in Thorsminde. Thorsminde is popular with fishing tourists who mainly catch herring and mackerel .
The church in the village is worth seeing, it was created from the former sea rescue station .
St. George Stranding Museum
In February 1992 the "Strandingsmuseum St. George" was opened. It presents numerous finds from two British shipwrecks, the HMS Defense and the warship HMS St. George . On Christmas Eve 1811 both were stranded in a hurricane just below the coast. Almost 1,400 sailors and passengers were killed in the accidents. Only 17 could be brought ashore alive by the locals. A memorial stone was set up in the dunes as a reminder, the place is now called Dødemandsbjergene ( Eng . Totenberge).
The impressive exhibits include the four-tonne anchor of the St. George and her rudder , which was lost before Lolland and was recovered in 2003. A skeleton recovered from the wreck of the St. George in 1997 , however, was soon removed from the exhibition after protests from Great Britain and buried in the cemetery.
Another part of the exhibition gives an overall impression of shipwrecks on the west coast between Blåvand and Thyborøn , sea rescue and beach piracy. Finally, exciting insights into the world of underwater archeology are given.
A chamber lock (center of the picture, drainage locks on the left) lets boats into the Nissum Fjord .
