Thyborøn is a small town in the Danish municipality of Lemvig in the Midtjylland region . It is located on the North Sea coast on the northern tip of the Harboøre Tange headland , which is separated from the Agger Tange headland by the Thyborøn Canal . To the east lies Nissum Bredning , part of the Limfjord . The place has 1965 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020).

Thyborøn originally belonged to the Vestervig-Agger municipality in Refs Herred, Thisted Amt . In 1954 - because of its remote geographical location south of the Limfjord - it became an independent Thyborøn municipality in Vandful Herred, Ringkøbing Amt . From 1970 up to the local government reform in 2007 formed Thyborøn with neighboring Harboøre the municipality Thyborøn-Harboøre .

Attractions

Sneglehuset (snail shell)

Worth seeing are the Jyllandsakvariet and Sneglehuset saltwater aquariums , a house completely decorated with snail shells and mussel shells.

With the construction of the Atlantic Wall , numerous bunkers were also built in Thyborøn. Some of the preserved concrete structures on the north beach form Thyborøns Kystcentret and house an interactive exhibition on the subject of life on the North Sea coast .

In 2015 the neighboring Red Barracks ( De røde barakker ) were renovated and included in the Sea War Museum Jutland for the Battle of the Skagerrak . The Danish coastal inspection had built the wooden barracks between 1930 and 1945 in connection with the construction of the groyne on Harboøre Tange. A memorial for those of all nations who remained at sea was erected on the outdoor area on the 100th anniversary of the Skagerrak Battle.

The city's landmark, the yellow- washed transformer station , used to lead the medium-voltage network to Agger . The mansard roof was combined from red roof tiles and wooden shingles .

Thyborøn Kirke

The residents of the village originally visited the church in Agger . After the February flood in 1825 had destroyed the permanent land connection, this required a crossing by ship, for going to church on Sundays as well as for weddings and funeral services. Only in 1908 did the place get its own church. Numerous renovations, a bad foundation and the harsh weather conditions led to the decision of the community in 2003 to replace the church with a new building. The demolition took place in 2009, the first nationwide demolition of a church in 50 years.

The modern reinforced concrete building was inaugurated on February 6, 2011. The church tower from 1969 was modified and integrated into the new building. Parts of the inventory - baptismal font , organ and altar decorations - also come from the previous building. One of the votive ships is unusual , the true -to- the-original fishing cutter "Anne-Line" with a length of 1.3 m (1:20 scale).

economy

The Cheminova chemical plant is located south of the village on secondary route 181 . One of the biggest environmental scandals in Danish history is linked to the location. Cheminova with 850 jobs has been part of the US company FMC Corporation since 2014 .

traffic

Thyborøn is the terminus of the railway line to Vemb ( Lemvigbanen ). A ferry runs from the port to Agger Tange.
