Nives ([ / 'nivəs / ]) is a female and male given name of Romance origin.

Origin and meaning

The name comes from the Italian neve or Spanish nieve , which means 'snow white' or just 'snow'. It is a short form of the name of the holy Nuestra Señora de las Nieves (translated: "Our Lady of the Snow"). This name goes back to the legend of Maria Schnee .

The name is often given in Italian and Spanish. It is also used in Croatia, probably as a holdover from Napoleonic-Spanish mercenaries who served in the Dubrovnik region in the 19th century.
