history

From April 9, 1953 to November 16, 1964, a few days after Grand Duke Jean ascended to the throne and moved to Berg Castle, Betzdorf Castle was the residence of the hereditary Grand Ducal family.

All of Grand Duke Jean's children were born at Schloss Betzdorf:

  • Princess Marie-Astrid (February 17, 1954)
  • Grand Duke Henri (April 16, 1955),
  • Prince Jean and Princess Margaretha (May 15, 1957),
  • Prince Guillaume (May 1, 1963).

From 1964 to 1982 the castle served as a nursing home. For the 75th anniversary of the scout movement in July 1982, the castle served 1200 foreign scouts as an international warehouse, after which it stood empty for a few years.

In 1986 the satellite operator SES Astra took over the castle from the state and subjected it to extensive renovation work. Today Schloss Betzdorf serves as the headquarters of the SES SA company
