Noachis Terra is an extensive, cratered highland region on the planet Mars . Its center is 45 ° south and 10 ° east. The region stretches for about 4800 kilometers between the huge impact basin Argyre Planitia in the west and Hellas Planitia in the east. It was named in 1979 after Noah , the biblical builder of the ark.
Noachis Terra is one of the geologically oldest formations on Mars and was formed 3.8 to 3.5 billion years ago during the Noachian period named after it . At that time, the planet's surface was still under heavy bombardment from asteroids and comets .
The entire region is littered with impact craters . The largest ( Greene , Darwin , Lohse , Kaiser , Proctor ) have a diameter of between 100 and 200 kilometers.
