Hellas Planitia , the Hellas-Plain , is the largest impact crater of Mars and after the South Pole-Aitken basin on the earth -moon 's second largest known solar system. The impact basin was named after Hellas , the proper name for Greece .
description
The Martian crater is located in the southern hemisphere of the planet. It has an elliptical shape with a size of about 2200 km × 1600 km and is the deepest region on Mars with a depth of up to 9 km. Around the crater is a ring of raised material about 2 km high.
To the northeast of Hellas Planitia is the Hadriacus Mons volcano . Hadriaca Patera, the 66 km large Caldera of the volcano, is 30 ° 12 ' S , 92 ° 47' O . At the southern slope of the volcano, the valley current of 794 km long Dao Vallis began ( 37 ° 37 ' S , 88 ° 53' O ) and extends to the east due to the Mars crater. The Dao Vallis is extended by the 360 km long Niger Vallis ( 34 ° 58 ′ S , 92 ° 34 ′ E ), beginning on the southeastern slope of the volcano. East of Hellas Planitia the 527 km long Stromtal Harmakhis Vallis (starts 40 ° 59 ' S , 90 ° 4' O ), which also extends to the east due to the Mars crater.
development
Hellas Planitia was probably formed around 3.9 to 3.5 billion years ago, in the Noachian period , by the impact of a kilometer-sized asteroid .
