Noah's Ark Zoo Farm is a zoo northwest of downtown Wraxall , Somerset . It is about 40 hectares. It was founded in 1999 by Anthony and Christina Bush. The educational concept of the zoo includes the spread of creationism .

history

The Bush couple ran dairy cattle on the leased Moat House farm from 1960 to 1995 . In 1995 they bought the farm from Lord Wraxall of Tyntesfield. They renovated the 17th century Moat House Farm building, which had neither water nor electricity. On the farm they ran arable farming and small sheep breeding. In 1998, the site was converted into Noah's Ark Zoo Farm . The opening took place in 1999, mainly with farm animals. Only a few wild animals from other countries were shown. From 2000 to 2004 the Ark Arena and the areas for monkeys and reptiles were built. In 2005, two white rhinos came to the zoo. From 2006 shows with animals were shown, including the bird of prey show. Giraffes, tapirs and capybaras came to the zoo in 2006. In 2007 the enclosure for Siamangs was added. Bengal tigers were kept from 2009 . In 2012, Elephant Eden , according to the zoo, the largest elephant enclosure in Europe, opened. In 2013, Anthony Bush's autobiography From Cows to Tigers: Building Noah's Ark was published .

The zoo is themed Africa, Asia, South America, Australia, primates and reptiles.

In the primate area, the five species of monkey Siamang , Black and White Vari , Ring- tailed Lemur , Lisztaffe and common marmoset are shown. The three species Siamang, Ring-tailed Lemur and Lisztaffe are on the IUCN Red List as critically endangered or critically endangered . Since the opening there have been offspring of monkeys. The Siamangs were brought to the zoo in 2007 as part of the European Conservation Breeding Program .

Different breeds of domestic animals are also kept. Birds of prey and owls such as the desert buzzard , eagle owl , barn owl and spotted owl are also shown in the zoo . There is a daily bird of prey show with birds of prey and owls . There is a 3.2 km long maze path.

criticism

The creationism represented in the zoo was repeatedly criticized.

In 2009, the British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums excluded the zoo from membership because a tiger was also awarded to a circus, the Great British Circus . The zoo is now run as a member again.
