Noeud , the knot, was a French measure of length and is considered a nautical measure.

The Mill marine or nautical mile was 9 ½ encablure ( cable length basis), the 100 fathoms or 194.9336 meters (including 195 or 194.9036 meters) measured. The cable length was later set at 200 meters.
