Nojim Maiyegun (born February 21, 1944 in Lagos ) is a retired Nigerian middleweight boxer.

career

Before his professional career, he won the bronze medal in the light middleweight division at the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 1964 , and lost in the semifinals to Joseph Gonzales from France . He achieved another success in 1966 when he finished third at the British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Kingston .

In 1971 Maiyegun turned professional and fought almost exclusively in Germany and Austria . His career went without any major highlights. His match record is positive - twelve wins and four point defeats - but his career did not really get going. Primarily he boxed against lower-class opponents. Three of his opponents can be described as important: Jorge Fernández from Argentina , to whom he lost in June 1972; Denny Moyer of the USA , whom he defeated on points in January 1973; and in his last fight in December 1973 Domenico Tiberia from Italy , against whom he was defeated on points. Maiyegun later went blind. Doctors suspect this was due to violent boxing beatings.
