The Nokia ringtone is an arrangement of bars 13-16 from the solo guitar composition Gran Vals written in 1902 by the Spanish composer Francisco Tárrega . In the original, the phrase ends with an E instead of the A of the Nokia ringtone.

The Gran Vals was discovered in 1993 by Anssi Vanjoki , then Deputy Chairman of the Management Board , who, together with Lauri Kivinen , who is now Head of Corporate Affairs , selected the phrase to use . The ringtone, which is protected as a sound trademark, was first used in the Nokia 2110 model, which was launched in 1994. Around 1998 the name of the ringtone on Nokia telephones was changed from "Grande Valse" to "Nokia Tune".

The Nokia ringtone rang more than 1.8 billion times per day, which is 20,000 times per second, according to a study in January 2010. A market analysis showed that 41% of consumers worldwide know the ringtone and associate it with Nokia; in Great Britain the figure is 74%.
