Nolini Kanta Gupta

Nolini Kanta Gupta (born January 13, 1889 in Faridpur , Bengal presidency , † February 7, 1984 ) was an Indian freedom fighter, author, poet and student of Sri Aurobindo . For several decades he was the general secretary of the Sri Aurobindo Ashram .

Childhood and youth

Nolini Kanta Gupta grew up in Rangpur and later attended the Presidency College in Calcutta . After the partition of Bengal in 1905 by the British colonial power, he joined a group of local revolutionaries to fight for the freedom of India. He was arrested in 1908 and spent a year in custody with Sri Aurobindo. After his acquittal, he worked for two newspapers published by Sri Aurobindo.

Activity in the Sri Aurobindo Ashram

Sri Aurobindo moved from Calcutta to Pondicherry in southeast India in 1910 . Six months later Gupta followed him and in 1926 finally joined the newly established community of the Sri Aurobindo Ashram. He served as the general secretary of the Ashram for more than sixty years and was also named one of the Trustees of the Ashram Trust. He also taught in the Ashram School, the International Center of Education, published numerous works in English and Bengali and was the editor of several magazines.
