Nomentano - San Lorenzo
The III. Municipality of Nomentano - San Lorenzo is one of the 19 municipalities of the city of Rome . It is located northeast of the old town and is bordered to the east by the Rome-Florence railway line.
Nomentano - San Lorenzo has 54,241 inhabitants (2006). It is divided into the following districts.

The Nomentano - San Lorenzo district was created at the end of the 19th century. It is named after both Via Nomentana and the Basilica of San Lorenzo Fuori le mura . While the district along Via Nomentana has a bourgeois character, the San Lorenz district is mainly student-dominated by the nearby university and has numerous bars, clubs and restaurants.

San Lorenzo was the most heavily bombed neighborhood in Rome by the Allies during World War II . Allegedly there were German troops and supply centers there.
To prevent a second Monte Cassino or even Stalingrad , Pope Pius XII refused . left the city and sought to make Rome an open (i.e., military-free) city. Many helped him, on the Vatican side Pankratius Pfeiffer , Domenico Tardini , Otto Faller , on the German Ernst von Weizsäcker and SS General Karl Wolff . The German field marshal Albert Kesselring declared Rome an open city in 1944 and withdrew all troops except for a rearguard. On June 4, 1944, Allied troops marched into Rome.
