Nominet is a non-profit organization headquartered in Oxford, United Kingdom . It was founded in 1996 and is responsible for the operation and administration of the top-level domain .uk .
history
After the introduction of .uk in 1985, domains with this extension were administered by the so-called Naming Committee , which consisted entirely of volunteers. After this could no longer handle the steadily increasing number of domains, the company Nominet was founded in 1996. The private limited company was chosen as the legal form , in which the shareholders do not participate in the profit, so that they actually work for the public benefit. The transfer of .uk administration from the Naming Committee to Nominet took place on May 14, 1996.
In 2006, Nominet announced that it wanted to restructure the company. An attempt was made to manage ENUMs in addition to domains . In addition, a change in the statutes should ensure that the members no longer have to be asked so often directly for organizational decisions.
Nominet reached the historic mark of 10 million registered .uk domains in March 2012. This makes the company one of the three largest network information centers worldwide.
criticism
In January 2010, Nominet came under fire after about 1,200 domains were blocked at the request of the Metropolitan Police Service . The company cited involvement in cybercrime as the reason for this , but this has not been proven for some domains. They were only suspected to have been involved in legal violations. A court order was not obtained by Nominet.
In 2012, it was also announced that Nominet had been criticized for discrimination . The former general manager sued the company for £ 101,000 in damages and compensation for pain and suffering . According to his own statement, the lawsuit mainly related to cases from 2008 and 2009.
