The Nonplus Crag is a striking and 1250 m high cliff in the eastern center of the West Antarctic Alexander I Island . In the LeMay Range , it towers near the head of the Jupiter Glacier .
Aerial photographs taken by the US polar explorer Lincoln Ellsworth on November 23, 1935 were used by the US cartographer WLG Joerg for mapping purposes . The British geographer Derek Searle of the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS) carried out a new mapping in 1960 using aerial photographs taken by the American Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition . The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee descriptively named it in 1961 after the puzzlement the FIDS had in identifying this object.
