Gaius Norbanus Sorex

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gaius Norbanus Sorex was an actor during the reign of Augustus in Pompeii .

Norbanus Sorex was a stage actor who held the second role in the performances. He was also magister of the Pagus Augustus Felix Suburbanus , that is, head of a residential area outside the walls of Pompeii. It is particularly interesting in this case that an actor held a public office from which members of his guild were normally excluded. Even so, Norbanus Sorex was obviously a recognized member of the Pompeii urban community. Two herms handed down by him are famous . One was in the building of Eumachia , the other, particularly well-known, in the Temple of Isis .

Maybe he was a descendant of the same name, in Plutarch mentioned Archimimus the family of the (Primary), the protégé consul of 83 v. BC, Gaius Norbanus , and friend of Sulla was. It is also presumed that he was a freedman and illegitimate son from the family of Norbanus. That would explain the unusual appreciation for an actor. Also the fact that his herm was set up in the Calcidicium of Eumachia, which would suggest connections to the imperial family. The Gens Norbana, that is, the Norbanus clan, is originally of Etruscan origin. The name Sorex, Soricis means " shrew ".
