Norbert Fuhr

Norbert Fuhr (* 1956 in Katzenelnbogen ) is a German computer scientist and has been a professor for practical computer science in the engineering faculty of the University of Duisburg-Essen since 2002 . There he heads the information systems department, with a focus on information retrieval .

Life

Fuhr studied data technology (technical informatics) in the electrical engineering department of the TU Darmstadt from 1975 to 1980 , which he obtained with the degree of Dipl.-Ing. completed. In 1986 he received his doctorate from Gerhard Lustig in the computer science department of the same university as a Dr.-Ing. with the thesis “Probabilistic Indexing and Retrieval”.

From 1980 to 1987 he worked as a research assistant and from 1987 to 1991 as a university assistant in the computer science department of the TU Darmstadt. In 1991 he was appointed professor in the computer science department at TU Dortmund University. Since 2002 he has been a professor at the Duisburg location of the University of Duisburg-Essen.

Honors

In 1987, Fuhr's dissertation was awarded the "Erich Pietsch Prize" of the German Documentation Society . In 2012 he received the Gerard Salton Award from ACM-SIGIR.
