North-South position (martial arts)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A BJJ fighter establishes the north-south position in a tournament

In grappling , the north-south position (also known by its English name, North South Position ) is a dominant position in which one fighter lies on his back with the other fighter lying upside down, usually with his head above Chest of the lower fighter. The top fighter can establish submission holds from this position or switch to other positions.

Technically, the position is closely related to the side control . The only difference is that the side control is carried out from the side and the north-south position from the head.

A feeding technique which can be established from this position and which is named after the position is the north-south choke .
