The northern cemetery of Augsburg is located in the Oberhausen district in the Oberhausen-Nord district . It covers almost 17 hectares and currently has around 11,300 earth graves. Of these, around 7800 grave sites are occupied and 3500 are free (as of 2017). The cemetery, including its cemetery wall, which partly dates from the 19th century, and its funeral hall are under monument protection .

history

The old Oberhausen cemetery forms the core of the north cemetery. This was laid out in 1854 and 1866 to relieve smaller older cemeteries at St. Pankratius in Lechhausen and St. Peter and Paul in Oberhausen, which were later abandoned.

After Oberhausen was incorporated into Augsburg, the cemetery was expanded to the north to its present size.

In the middle of the cemetery there is a funeral hall to which the main path leads. The simple bare brick building by Otto Holzer and Otto Mauler is marked with the year 1930 and was renovated in 1958.

Redesign of fallow land, areas for certain ethnic groups and religious communities

Because of the sharp rise in the cost of earth graves, large areas of the north cemetery are fallow. Various concepts were therefore examined to make better use of these areas.

The city's environmental committee decided in 2017 to convert the unappealing north cemetery into a park cemetery with a recreational function for the north of the city. The increasing need for natural burial forms should be taken into account. The suggestion to separate the fallow land of the cemetery for conversion as allotment gardens was not accepted.

In order to better support special burial cultures of migrants , separate burial areas are also to be built on the north cemetery. The starting point for this in 2016 was a request from the Yezidi community in Augsburg to set up a separate area for Yazidis with a burial ground facing Mecca . There are also considerations of creating a separate area for Muslims . The question of whether such a separation would prevent the integration of immigrants or not had sparked lively discussions.

In 2018, a memorial plaque for the Sinti and Roma from Augsburg who were killed by the National Socialists was installed in the north cemetery . Its inscription contains, among other things, the sentence: "Injustice must be named so that it affects us".
