A mourning hall is a building designed for funeral ceremonies , often in a cemetery . With regard to church burials , one also speaks of a funeral hall or cemetery chapel , even if the building is not owned by a church .

Today, the mourning halls are mostly used to store the dead, either in cold rooms or in cool boxes. There is often a storage room in the building for equipment needed for the funeral, such as B. the car to transport the coffin , the lowering mechanism, etc. Mourning halls have been built in the last decades by the municipal side in almost all cemeteries, because the laying out of the dead at home was no longer allowed. But private companies are also involved in the construction of mourning halls, which are open to all denominations and are not tied to any time conditions of the cemetery operation.
