Life

Norma Cruz was born in 1966. In 1999, her daughter was raped by her stepfather. From then on, Norma fought in court to punish the man - and won. However, it had cost her an incredible amount of strength, patience, money and time and she was at the limit of resilience. To help other women who were doing similarly in Guatemala, she co-founded the Fundacion Sobreviventes (Foundation for Survivors), which was founded in 2003 and is based in Guatemala City . This organization works to ensure that perpetrators of rape and kidnapping of girls and women are not only brought to justice, but also punished. And that the delay in negotiations and the corruption of the judiciary in this direction will come to an end. It is also part of the struggle against ubiquitous machism and general violence, e.g. B. Dedicated by youth gangs in Guatemala. She has received regular death threats since 2008 and is under police protection. The threats have spread to her daughter and son. She has been the head of the foundation since 2008, making her one of the leading women's rights activists in Latin America.
