Standard contract
The standard contract is a binding framework agreement for all publishers in Germany , which takes into account all aspects of a publishing contract for authors .
content
The standard contract regulates the structure of the remuneration of authors, but not their specific amount. In it, among other things, the subject of the contract is named exactly. B. clarified for translations and fixed the sales fees for the publisher's expenses. The latter can include a “guaranteed minimum fee ” for each printed page commenced and a percentage of the retail price ( royalties ) for each copy of the book sold.
history
After it was founded in 1969, one of the main concerns of the Association of German Writers (VS) was the conclusion of a so-called "standard contract" with the German Book Trade Association , which both sides finally agreed on in 1978. Since then, the standard contract has been a binding framework agreement for all publishers, supplemented by the 2002 revised copyright law . Over the years, the standard contract has been repeatedly adapted to the changed conditions, most recently on January 23, 2014.
In addition, publishers and the Association of German-Language Translators of Literary and Scientific Works as well as the VS / Federal Translator Department have also drawn up “Common rules on remuneration for translations”, which have been in force since April 1, 2014.
