Open Sans is a sans-serif font designed by Steve Matteson and commissioned by Google .

Open Sans is available in a variety of flavors. There are five weightings (300 Light, 400 Normal, Semi-Bold 600, Bold 700 and Extra Bold 800), each with an italic version that includes a total of ten variants. There is also a separate font called Open Sans Condensed with 3 width variations.

The family also has a number of stylistic alternatives, such as: B. a seriffed capital letter- I (for situations in which this could be confused with the number- 1 or the lowercase letter- l ) and a choice between a one- and two-story g . The numbers can be set as table, proportional or text numbers.

Open Sans is a popular flat design- style web design font . In July 2018, it was the second most used font at Google Fonts with 28.2 billion uses on more than 17,000,000 websites .

It is used as Mozilla's standard font for websites and in the Telegram desktop app.

It is the official font for the Labor Party , Co-operative Party and Liberal Democrats in the United Kingdom .

Unicode support

The character repertoire includes 897 glyphs covering the Latin , Greek and Cyrillic alphabets with a wide range of diacritical marks . In January 2014, Israeli type designer Yanek Iontef released an extension font that covers the Hebrew alphabet and supports Niqqud (but not Teamim ) for early access. The extension font became popular and was used by prominent institutions like Tel Aviv University in their 2016 rebranding, as well as by the Haaretz website.
