Type Volcanic cone

The North Berwick Law is located on the southern edge of the small Scottish port town of North Berwick in the East Lothian region on the south bank of the Firth of Forth . It is a 187-meter-high volcanic cone made of basalt, the remains of a volcano that was active 335 million years ago and was later reshaped by the glaciers of the Cold Age and given its current elongated shape. Law is the Scottish word for volcanic cones such as those found in Dundee , for example .

There is a parking lot at the foot of the Law , and hiking trails are good access to the mountain. Until recently, the summit was marked by an arch made from two whale pines that had stood there since 1933. In 2005, however, they fell apart so much that they collapsed and the remains were taken away by helicopter. Following an anonymous donation in 2007, a replica of the bones was installed the following year.

At the top there are also the ruins of some buildings that were used as a lookout point during the Napoleonic Wars. From there you have a view over the Firth of Forth, Edinburgh and far into Fife .
