Notation Interchange File Format

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Notation Interchange File Format (NIFF) is a data format for exchanging musical notations from music notation programs.

The NIFF project was started in February 1994 to create an open format that would allow music to be exchanged between various music OCR programs, music editors and music notation programs .

The NIFF format itself is based on RIFF (Resource Interchange File Format), a container format for storing multimedia content, which was developed in 1991 by Microsoft and IBM .

The MusicXML format has meanwhile made NIFF obsolete. The NIFF Software Development Kit is available for informational purposes from the NIFF SDK archive.
