Nuijamaa [ ˈnuijɑmɑː ] is a village in eastern Finland near the city of Lappeenranta . Until 1989 Nuijamaa formed its own municipality , today the place belongs to Lappeenranta.

The church village Nuijamaa is located approx. 25 km southeast of the city center of Lappeenranta on the shores of Lake Nuijamaanjärvi and has around 300 inhabitants. The border with Russia runs directly at Nuijamaa, the border strip is only 50 meters wide at this point. There has been an international border crossing at Nuijamaa since 1975. After Vaalimaa near Virolahti , it is the second most frequented on the Finnish-Russian border. In 2007 there were 1.6 million border crossings. The state road 13 to Kokkola has its beginning at the border crossing Nuijamaa.

Nuijamaa parish was founded in 1905 from parts of the rural parish Viipuri , Lappee , Jääski and Joutseno . Before the Second World War it had an area of ​​356 km². About half of this was ceded to the Soviet Union in 1944 . In 1989, Nuijamaa was incorporated into Lappeenranta.
