Vaalimaa

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Vaalimaa [ ˈvɑːlimɑː ] is a place in the south-east of Finland . It is located in the municipality of Virolahti, right on the border with Russia .

The Vaalimaa border crossing is the busiest on the Finnish eastern border and between the EU and Russia. In 2007 2.7 million border crossings were registered. In the same year, a border parking lot for 1,000 trucks had to be built in Vaalimaa because the increasing volume of traffic and the slow processing on the Russian side caused truck jams of up to 50 km in length.

State road 7 , which comes from the capital Helsinki , 187 km to the west, ends at the border crossing at Vaalimaa. The European route 18 follows the course of the state route 7 and continues on the Russian side to Saint Petersburg, 203 km away . In addition, Vaalimaa is the starting point of the Via Karelia ( Runon ja Rajan tie ) holiday route , which follows the Finnish eastern border to Salla in Lapland.
