Buchenhofen compensation pond

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Buchenhofen compensation pond was a damming up of the Wupper in the Buchenhofen district of Wuppertal .

Built around the turn of the 20th century was the balancing pond at that time after the dam Dahlhausen and the equalization pond Beyenburg the third major impoundment over the Wupper. It had a storage capacity of 66,000 m³ and was used to store water overnight, which was drained evenly during the day for the operation of downstream water engines such as the Bergische Elektrizitätswerk near Müngsten . The drain was 1,500 liters per second with a drain time of 14.5 hours per day. A guard operated the drain and disposed of items washed up with the river.

The compensation pond existed until the middle of the 20th century and finally had to give way to the expanding Buchenhofen sewage treatment plant in Wuppertal . The Wupper was relocated to this area from 1960, so that the shrunken basin only served as a preliminary basin for the sludge ponds attached to the sewage treatment plant until 1980 .
