On the one hand, a zero-voltage switch is a safety switch that prevents an electrically operated device, machine or system from restarting automatically after a power failure, for example after a fuse has been triggered , when the power supply returns. (It would be more understandable to call it an off switch when voltage = zero.) B. achieved by a relay with a self-holding function .

Such switches are used, for example, in stationary circular saws .

A semiconductor relay , solid state relay , is also referred to as a zero voltage switch , which only switches on or becomes conductive when the voltage crosses zero. This avoids rapid current changes and thus disturbances in the power grid.
