Nupe (people)
The Nupe are a people mainly found in the Nigerian state of Niger .
They speak Nupe , a nupoid language . Most of the Nupe are Muslim , but their culture is shaped by both Islam and their traditional religion .
They once had their own state, Nupe , which was smashed by British colonial power.
Culture
Many Nupe still wear tribal marks in the form of scars on their faces, although this tradition is waning more and more. The Nupe and its art and tradition were first described by the African explorer and ethnographer Siegfried Frederick Nadel (1903–1956), whose book Black Byzantium is one of the anthropological classics.
