Siegfried Ferdinand Nadel

Siegfried Ferdinand Nadel (born April 24, 1903 in Lemberg , Austria-Hungary , † January 14, 1956 in Canberra , Australia; also SF Nadel , Siegfried F. Nadel , Siegfried Frederick Nadel , Frederick Nadel or Fred Nadel ) was born in Galicia British musicologist, psychologist and social anthropologist . His specialty was African ethnology .

His work A Black Byzantium. The Kingdom of Nupe in Nigeria (Eng. "A Black Byzantium. The Kingdom of the Nupe in Nigeria"), London 1946, is considered a classic in anthropology.

Life

Siegfried Nadel was the son of the lawyer Moritz Nadel and his wife Adele geb. Deer jump. He began his training in music and studied piano with Richard Robert at the State Academy and music history at the University of Vienna , but also developed an interest in philosophy and psychology . He then studied the latter with Karl Bühler at the Psychological Institute of the University of Vienna, and the former with Moritz Schlick . On November 11, 1925, he was with his work "On the Psychology of Konsonanzerlebens " Dr. phil. PhD.

He started his career in music. He published books on Musical Typology (1931) and the Italian composer Ferruccio Busoni and spent a short time as an assistant conductor at the Düsseldorf Opera House in 1925.

In 1926 Nadel married the musicologist Lisbeth Braun (* 1900) in Vienna. Braun had received her doctorate three years earlier on the subject of "Joseph Starzer's ballet compositions".

After studying the music of primitive peoples at the Phonogram Archive in Berlin and African languages at the University of Berlin , Nadel received a Rockefeller grant in 1932 , which enabled him to conduct postgraduate training in anthropological field research in Africa. Nadel studied at the London School of Economics and Political Science ( LSE ) under the direction of Bronisław Malinowski . He began his field work in Nigeria in 1933 , which earned him a Ph.D. Title in anthropology from the LSE.

From 1941, Nadel served in the Sudan Defense Force , as did Wilfred Thesiger , and later switched to the British Army ; he was made Secretary of Native Affairs and Deputy Chief Secretary and held these posts until his dismissal in 1944.

Nadel was appointed to the Chair of Anthropology at the Australian National University in 1950 . He spent much of his time lecturing around the world on his wartime experiences and field research in Nigeria and Sudan . He died in Canberra.
