The Nurgebirge (tr .: Nur Dağları ) also called Amanosgebirge (tr .: Amanos Dağları ) or Gavurgebirge (tr .: Gâvur Dağları , eng .: mountains of the infidels ) are a mountain range east of the Gulf of İskenderun . The Amanos Dağları branch off at the east end of the Taurus Mountains and run in a south-south-west direction. The mountain range extends along the Mediterranean coast to Lebanon . The east and west slopes consist of a core of Paleozoic schist and a mantle of Cretan limestone . At this part of the mountain train takes you far-flung remnants of iron ore - mines .
The highest peak is the Bozdağ (Daz Dağı) with 2240 m, but the most famous is the Musa Dağı , which was immortalized by Franz Werfel in his novel The Forty Days of Musa Dagh . The mountain is popularly called Gâvur Dağları , d. H. “Mountains of the unbelievers”, as it was a Christian area until the Armenian genocide .
The port city of İskenderun and the Payas market are located at the western foot of the Amanos Dağları. It used to be a large caravanserai on the old trade route from Asia Minor to Syria .
