The Nuseirat refugee camp ( Arabic مخيّم النصيرات, DMG Muḫayyam an-Nuṣayrāt ) is a refugee camp within the Dair al-Balah governorate of the Palestinian Authority or the State of Palestine . According to the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics, the city had 31,747 inhabitants as of mid-2017. By 2020 this number rose to 34,194 inhabitants. About 93,000 people live in the entire Nuseirat settlement.
The Nuseirat camp was named after the local Nuseirat tribe, which is part of the larger Hanajira Confederation and historically dominated the area between Dair al-Balah and Gaza. Most of the refugees came from southern areas of Palestine such as Beersheba and the coastal plain after the Palestine War of 1948. Before UNRWA set up the camp , the 16,000 or so original refugees settled on the site of a former British military prison.
Israel's blockade of Gaza has made life increasingly difficult for most of the refugees in the camp, which is characterized by high unemployment and poverty. Other problems include contaminated water and frequent power outages. For the supply of food, the camp is dependent on aid supplies from the United Nations Relief Organization for Palestine Refugees in the Middle East.
