Nuuk Posse is the first and most famous hip-hop group in Greenland . The band, whose members are all Inuit , formed in 1985 and took their name Nuuk Posse in 1991 . Nuuk Posse's texts are written in Greenlandic (Sisimiut dialect), Danish and English .
Sussa Apinnagu was the name of their first single, released in 1991. In 1994 their album NP was released , on which all the instrumental tricks and tricks of the genre hip-hop can be recognized. Another single, Indigenous Reality , was followed by the album Kaataq in 1996 . On the compilation The Best of International Hip Hop (2000) the band was represented with Uteqqippugut (Back in Business) .
Most of the lyrics are by John Olsen, one of six band members. Among the issues that are ripped off are serious ones like the alcohol abuse of indigenous Greenlanders. With their mix of traditional chants and modern hip-hop, the band wants to remind the young Greenlanders of their identity as Inuit.
In 1995 Nuuk Posse received the Greenland Culture Prize . In 2004 they were nominated by the UN as “Ambassadors of Truth”.
