Nyakim Gatwechsel

Nyakim Gatwick (born January 27, 1993 in Gambela , Ethiopia ) is a South Sudanese model who has worked for Calvin Klein and L'Oreal , among others . She is characterized by her extremely dark skin color .

Career

Gatwechsel's parents lived in Maiwut in South Sudan before they fled the South Sudanese civil war to Gambela in Ethiopia, where Nyakim was born. From there they emigrated to Kenya, where they lived in refugee camps, and eventually emigrated with her family to the United States when she was 14 years old. She originally settled in Buffalo, New York and later moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota. Although she was neither born nor been there in South Sudan, she still considers herself a South Sudanese. After attending a fashion show at St. Cloud State University , she considered a career as a model. Among other things, she was featured on advertising posters for the film Jigsaw 2017 .

Gatwechsel is known for her naturally dark skin color and has been nicknamed "Queen of Darkness". Gatwechsel has faced self-esteem issues and comments from people advocating bleaching to lighten skin color. She has over 790,000 followers on Instagram.
