Nyctography
The nyctography (German: night writing) is a form of shorthand , which uses a simple alphabet consisting of dots and dashes, which are arranged within a square ( "Square Alphabet"). According to the 19th century Universal Dictionary, Grand dictionnaire universel du XIXe siècle , nyctographie means the art of writing without seeing.
history
The alphabet of shorthand was published by the French Julien Leroy on October 30, 1815. The Nyctographie alphabet was published in November 1817 by the Société d'encouragement pour l'industrie nationale.
The well-known British writer and mathematician Lewis Carroll developed a writing instrument for this shorthand in 1891, the typhlograph, also known as the Nyctograph, which was a kind of template for Julien Leroy's Square Alphabet. The last version of the Nyctograph is recorded in Lewis Carroll's diary of September 24, 1891 and was also the subject of a letter to "The Lady" magazine of October 29, 1891. The Lewis Carroll Society of North America under the direction of Alan Tannenbaum reconstructed it 2005 Lewis Carroll's Nyctograph.
In 2011, a nyctography edition was published by Carroll's famous children's book Alice's Adventures in Wonderland ( Alice in Wonderland ) .
