OFO 1 ( Orbiting Frog Otolith ) was a satellite from the US space agency NASA .

construction

Schematic drawing of how a bullfrog equipped with electrodes sits in the centrifuge of the OFO 1

The satellite was 1.68 m long and 76 cm in diameter. There were two bullfrogs on board as part of a biological-medical experiment to research the otolith in the satellite, since the otoliths of the bullfrog are very similar to those of humans. The frogs had electrodes implanted in their vestibular nerves. They were housed in a small centrifuge to simulate different states of gravity. The centrifuges were started by radio command from Earth.

mission

After the successful start, the biometric data of the frogs were compared with a comparison group on Earth. Three days after reaching orbit, the animals' reactions to different states of gravity had equalized. After six days, the test animals died unexpectedly. OFO 1 burned up in the atmosphere after 181 days.

Also on board the rocket was the RM-1 payload, which consisted of measuring devices for determining the density and energy of micrometeorites and was integrated into the fourth stage of the Scout rocket .
