The ORC 1-6 ( LCDR Aeolus class ) were a series of ten steam locomotives with a 2'B wheel arrangement . The Ottoman Railway Company (ORC), which ordered the locomotives, eventually only received the first six locomotives. The other four were sold by R. & W. Hawthorn & Co. to the London, Chatham and Dover Railway (LCDR). Hawthorn acted as a representative for Robert Stephenson & Co. , who built the locomotives but had subcontracted some components to Hawthorn. They were delivered to the LCDR between September 1860 and April 1861. William Martley had all of the locomotives rebuilt in 1872 and 1873 in the LCDR's Longhedge Works using components from the original locomotives, including the boilers, as 1B tank locomotives .

Like other LCDR locomotives put into service before 1874, they originally had no numbers, but were only referred to by names. In November 1875 gave William Kirtley , of Martley after his death in 1874 was succeeded, the locomotives, the class designation S . The locomotives were now given the numbers 71–74. In the years 1886 to 1888, the locomotives received new boilers. In early 1899 the locomotives were added to the South Eastern and Chatham Railway (SECR) inventory . Their numbers were increased by 459 to avoid duplication with locomotives of the South Eastern Railway . In July 1905 the decommissioning of the locomotives began, but since all their numbers were intended for new locomotives of the SECR class H , the remaining locomotives were transferred to the duplicate list in the same month , but only two were known to have been redrawn; the last was eliminated in November 1909.

The last of the locomotives delivered to ORC were retired in 1930.

The two external cylinders were mounted horizontally and the bogie had to have a long wheelbase by modern standards.
