Oakwood Underground Station
Oakwood is an overground station of the London Underground in the London Borough of Enfield . It is in the Travelcard tariff zone 5 on Bramley Road. In 2013, 2.79 million passengers used this station served by the Piccadilly Line .
The station opened on March 13, 1933, at that time under the name Enfield West . Oakwood , Merryhills and East Barnet were also discussed as possible name alternatives . The northern terminus was here for a little over four months until the Piccadilly Line reached its definitive endpoint at Cockfosters on July 31, 1933 . On May 3, 1934, the station was renamed Enfield (Oakwood) and was given its current name on September 1, 1946.
Like the other stations in the northern part of the Piccadilly Line, this one was designed by Charles Holden in the modernist style. The station building is unusually large and spacious despite the comparatively low number of passengers. Natural daylight falls through the large windows into the counter hall. There is a shopping arcade on both sides of the building. The building has been a listed building since 1971. At first it had the protection level Grade II , in 2011 this was increased to Grade II * due to the outstanding architectural importance. West of the station is one of the two main workshops on the Piccadilly Line with a parking facility.
