Southgate is a London Underground station in the London Borough of Enfield . It is in the Travelcard tariff zone 4 under the Southgate Circus, a large roundabout . In 2013, 5.39 million passengers used this station served by the Piccadilly Line .

The station opened on March 13, 1933. Like all stations in the northern part of the Piccadilly Line, this one was designed by Charles Holden . Southgate is considered a particularly successful example of the Art Deco style. The station building is circular and partially surrounded by a shopping mall. It is made of brick, reinforced concrete, and glass. A lighting element that resembles a Tesla coil rises above the roof . The two elevators still have the lighting from the 1930s, the wall tiles have a predominantly bronze color. At the end of the 1990s, one of the three entrances was closed in order to be able to set up an additional box office. The northern end of the tunnel can be seen from the platforms.

The building has been a listed building since 1971 . At first it had the protection level Grade II , in 2009 this was increased to Grade II * due to the outstanding architectural importance. A comprehensive renovation took place in 2008.

After the most successful performance of the English national soccer team at a World Cup in the past 28 years, the station was renamed " Gareth Southgate " for 48 hours on July 16, 2018 in honor of the national coach .
