Obéilar is a town in the province of Granada and belongs to the municipality of Íllora . It is located on the edge of the Vega of Granada about 5 km southeast of Íllora and 24 km west of Granada. Currently the place has about 500 inhabitants.
history
The establishment of the place goes back to the time of the Arab rule. At that time, the small town was protected by a castle, which has now completely disappeared. In the course of the Reconquista , the Christian reconquest of Islamic territories, the place was razed to the ground in 1431, but later repopulated. Only in 1486 came the place together with the neighboring Íllora finally under Christian rule.
Culture
The celebrations in honor of the patroness of the place, the Virgen del Carmen, take place every year in July.
etymology
It is unclear where the name "Obéilar" comes from. It is believed, however, that it comes from the Arabic "Ubaila" which means "little camel".
The place is later mentioned as "Barriada de Íllora" and more recently as "Estación de Íllora" in maps and documents. In the vernacular, the place is still often referred to only as "La Estación" (i.e. "the stop" or "the train station"), as the now disused railway line from Granada to Loja passed here and the train station for the villages of Láchar and Íllora was here.
