This is an alp for grazing Galtvieh and a plot of land and an alpine hut (Walenlittenhütte) at the same location. Word meaning

The name Oberalp comes from the location of the Alpe in the area of the Alpine complex in the Mellental (in the sense of: the Upper Alpe). In Vorarlberg, the name “Walenlitte” only occurs in this area of the municipality of Dornbirn / Mellau im Mellental and in the municipality of Hittisau (as a field name). The field name in Hittisau is first mentioned in 1471 as " Wallenlitten ". This is a court and hang name south of the church in Hittisau.

The meaning of “whale” (Vorarlberg dialect also: Walla ) cannot be clearly assigned. Werner Vogt suspects that the word can be derived from "whale" or "whale" (= welsch ). See also: " Walen " (Venediger).

"Litten" (Vorarlberg dialect : Litta), ahd .: leit, hdt : Leite, is to be understood in the sense of mountain slope, slope, crash, dump, slope, backrest and refers to the location of the alp.

history

The Oberalp or Walenlitten is mentioned for the first time in a border description from 1417. For centuries, there have been disputes with neighboring alpine companions from the Bregenzerwald regarding the pasture boundaries on the alp . It was not until 1951 that the decision was made in favor of the Alpe Hintermellen through a border correction above the "Schmittle" corridor on the ridge of the Sünserspitze .

Location and use, geology

Example of subalpine-alpine vegetation in autumn on the nearby Sünser Alpe

The Alpe is located on the south-eastern border of the municipality of Dornbirn and to the west below the Sünser Spitze on a westward sloping slope. The Alpe has no access for motor vehicles. This alpine area is a small contiguous area with typical alpine landscapes in partly the steepest location with natural meadows, scree slopes and subalpine bushes, typical of the subalpine-alpine level.
