Oberbergisches Land
The Oberbergisches Land is the southeastern part of the Bergisches Land in North Rhine-Westphalia .
In today's linguistic usage, the "Oberbergisches" is sometimes, but incorrectly, the area of today's Oberbergisches Kreis .
During the 19th and 20th centuries, the Oberbergisches Land was roughly the area of the Oberbergisches Kreis before 1975, i.e. the area south of the catchment area of Wupper and Dhünn with no natural delimitation to the west from the Rheinisch-Bergisches. Under no circumstances were Radevormwald, Hückeswagen and Wipperfürth (which have belonged to the district since 1975) to be included in the Oberbergischen.
Historically, the Oberbergisches Land can be defined much broader. As early as 1740, a description of the Duchy of Berg with its 17 offices separated the " Niederbergische Land " north of the Wupper from the "Oberbergische" south of the Wupper. From a purely historical point of view, large parts of the Oberberg district did not belong to the Duchy of Berg , but to the dominions of Gimborn and Homburg.
The Oberbergisch thus encompasses in the historical sense
- the Rheinisch-Bergisches Kreis ,
- the Oberbergischer Kreis ,
- the right bank of the Rhine-Sieg district and
- the independent city of Leverkusen .
