This copper engraving from around 1760 shows the previous building of the upper fountain master's house, denoted by the letter H.

The upper fountain master's house in Augsburg , also known as the “ house near the fish ”, served as the official residence of the Augsburg fountain master . Today it is part of the listed historic waterworks at the Red Gate .

location

The upper Brunnenmeisterhaus is located at the Red Gate . It is built directly onto the small water tower and there is also direct access from the house to the water towers. The entrance to the house is located on the “Am Roten Tor” square, on the side of the Holy Spirit Chapel . You enter the house via a footbridge that leads over the “Vorderer Lech” canal coming from the aqueduct at the Red Gate and flowing directly past the house .

The house is called the “upper” well master's house to distinguish it from the lower fountain master 's house, which belongs to the same ensemble, but served as a storage facility and workshop, not as an apartment.

history

The house is a two-storey eaves-sided mansard roof building with a central dwarf house . It is essentially from the 17th century. Its outward appearance dates from the 18th century with classicist decoration from the 19th century. The entrance is flanked by two water-spouting bronze dolphin figures , which is where the name “House with the Fishes” comes from.

After a period of decay, the house was renovated by the city of Augsburg from 2005 to 2010 and now houses a museum about the technical history of Augsburg's water supply. Remains of old frescoes are preserved inside .

The most important fountain master who lived in this house was Caspar Walter . His paintings and an original of his Hydraulica Augustana are on display in the museum.
