Holy Spirit Chapel (Augsburg)
The Heilig-Geist-Kapelle in Augsburg is located in the Heilig-Geist-Spital in the Spitalgasse right next to the upper fountain master house at the Red Gate . It is also known as the hospital band . It is a monument in the Augsburg-Lechviertel district, eastern Ulrichsviertel .
history
The chapel in the south of the west wing of the hospital was planned together with the hospital by the Augsburg city architect Elias Holl and incorporated into the hospital's layout. It occupies part of the west wing of the hospital. In 1648 the originally Catholic chapel became Protestant.
Around 1700 an organ gallery with twisted columns and paintings on the parapet was built in the chapel. Today's pulpit with evangelist figures and a dove of the Holy Spirit was built at the beginning of the 18th century.
Downsizing of the chapel
During the secularization of the hospital in 1805, the hospital parish was dissolved and attached to the Protestant parish of Ortisei . In 1808, the chapel was reduced by about half to two southern bays in order to use the space gained for hospital wards. The Augsburger Puppenkiste has been housed in this part of the building since 1948 . Access to the doll box is from Spitalgasse.
Todays use
Since the establishment of the Protestant school in front of the Red Gate in 1901, the Heilig-Geist-Kapelle has been a school church for the teachers and children of this school.
Since 1953, the old Catholic parish of Augsburg has celebrated its services in today's Heilig-Geist-Kapelle as guests of the evangelical parish of St. Ulrich. In the summer of 2012, the Old Catholics moved into their own newly built location in the Apostelin Junia Church .
There are regular evangelical services in the chapel and, if requested, baptisms, weddings, funeral services and special devotions take place.
