The Apostelin Junia Church in Augsburg

The Apostelin Junia Church is a sacred building of the Old Catholic Parish in Augsburg , built between 2009 and 2012 , named after the Apostle Junia .

Building history

The old Catholic parish in Augsburg, which has existed since 1894, celebrated its services first in the goldsmith 's chapel of the Evangelical Church of St. Anna , and since 1952 in the Heilig-Geist-Kapelle at the Red Gate .

After Alexandra Caspari became a pastor in Augsburg in 2005 as one of the first women in the priestly ministry , the Old Catholic Church also recorded a slight increase in membership and a gradual rejuvenation in Augsburg. So in 2009 the idea arose to build our own church in Sheridan Park . The entire congregation was always involved in the entire process of conception, planning and construction, as required by the synodal principles of the Old Catholic Church.

The church was planned by the Augsburg architect Frank Lattke , who accompanied the congregation during the three-year planning and construction phase (2009 to 2012) and did not want to present the people with anything “finished”, but instead embarked on a joint (synodal) development process. On the occasion of the consecration of the church on July 8, 2012 by Bishop Matthias Ring , Lattke formulated: "The congregation stands with its feet on the ground and with its heart looks heavenward."

location

The Apostelin Junia Church is located in the middle of the Augsburg Sheridan area in the Pfersee district, near a park with old trees. Full-grown deciduous trees and a high wall line the southern property line. The south side of the park forms a public square; the east and west sides have a more private and contemplative character. The property has a size of 1500 square meters.

Space program

The sacred space is elevated above the parish hall. A freely accessible, covered staircase leads up to a loggia . From the top of the stairs there is an unobstructed view to the south into the park and towards the center of Augsburg. The church is also entered from there. This offers space for 80 to 100 parishioners. The visible wooden surfaces radiate warmth and ensure good room acoustics .

The nine-meter-high room, made entirely of wood, is almost cube-shaped. There are no visible windows that could distract the view outside. Nevertheless, the room is bright, because four round arches give it light. The space is concentrated in the middle and opens exclusively upwards, to the sky.

The parish rooms, on the other hand, are arranged at ground level and are a little lowered below the church area. All areas, church as well as parish rooms, are accessible. The community hall can be divided and has its own access to the garden on the east side.

The externally simple wooden structure meets contemporary ecological standards. A community center and a house were built next to the church.

building-costs

The construction costs for the ensemble of church, community center and residential building amounted to 2.3 million euros. The construction was financed by donations and loans from other old Catholic communities. In addition, the rental income from the three municipal apartments is part of the financing, as is the income from the photovoltaic system on the roof.
