history

The ruin of the castle - woodcut from the 18th century

The castle, built around 1380 on the Kalkberg, was probably built by the Opole duke Jan Kropidło . It stood near the Goslavice Gate and was part of the fortifications.

In 1615 it was badly destroyed in the great city fire. The remains of the castle building were demolished in 1637 and mostly used to rebuild the city. Only the square tower from the end of the 14th century, which was used as a granary, has survived.

In the middle of the 19th century, the tower was raised by one floor and decorated with neo-Gothic battlements . In 1898 it was added to the newly built high school building and used for school purposes. The monument to Józef Lompa , created by Joanna Domaszewska , was erected in front of the tower in the 1960s . In 2007 it was in front of the Kasprowicz School on Ul. Osmanczyka relocated.

In October 2017, work began on converting and revitalizing the area around the square, preserved tower. There are plans to make the green space in front of it more attractive and to make the tower more visible in the cityscape. The existing deciduous trees were felled in autumn 2017. In April 2018 there was a construction freeze on the construction site. During excavations, remains of the medieval city fortifications were discovered. These then had to be secured first. Due to the strict schedule, the city decided to bury the remains of the wall again. These were prepared in such a way that disclosure and a museum visit would be possible in the future. The tower was renovated from the outside in the course of the revitalization work and was given direct access to Kopernikus-Platz via a bridge with glass balustrades. In total, the project cost almost five million zlotys. The construction work was to be completed at the end of October 2018. At the same time the preserved tower of the Upper Castle was renovated. The work was completed in November 2018 and cost almost 5.3 million zlotys. A permanent exhibition on the history of the castle was opened inside the castle.
