Surface ripe

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Reif surface is a frost layer located in starry Frost nights on a snow surface by sublimation can be formed. It consists of leaf-shaped ice crystals , which mostly melt away on sunny slopes, but can form thick layers on shady slopes during longer periods of frost.

If surface hoarfrost is snowed in, it represents a great danger for skiers, because it prevents the binding of the lower layer of snow with the layer above and forms an "ideal" sliding layer for slab avalanches . This problem shows up with the nigg effect as well .
